February Meeting – Axel Kratel and Greenwood Scion Exchange

The next SCV-CRFG chapter meeting will be held on Saturday February 12, 2011 at Prusch Park from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.  Axel Kratel will be our guest speaker.  His presentation will be on the fascinating subject of “The Lost Crop of the Incas”.  At his orchard in the Santa Cruz area, Axel grows a large collection of fruits, with a primary focus on Apple varieties.  As most of you know, Axel regularly contributes his insight and knowledge to chapter members via his Yahoo group postings.

In addition to Axel’s presentation, we will be holding our annual greenwood scion exchange at the meeting.  We have moved this exchange up from the normal April meeting to help ensure that greenwood scions and the trees to which they might be grafted/budded will not yet have started their springtime growth.  Members are encouraged to bring healthy cuttings from their appropriate evergreen fruit trees (e.g. citrus, avocado, loquat, guava).  Scions should be about pencil size in diameter and 6 – 8 inches in length.  Place the scions in a sealed plastic bag and be sure to label the bag with the fruit variety, your name, and city where the cuttings were taken.
